Press Release - Walkerton Clean Water Legacy Award Now Accepting Applications

Brockton, Ontario (April 4, 2025) - The fifth annual Walkerton Clean Water Legacy Award is officially open for applications. This prestigious award recognizes local students who are pursuing careers in environmental science or clean water management. The selected recipient will receive a $1,500 scholarship to support their studies at a recognized college or university, or at the Walkerton Clean Water Centre.

Students from Bruce and Grey Counties are encouraged to apply online through Community Foundation Grey Bruce's website. The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2025, with all applications to be reviewed by a panel of local representatives under the guidance of the Community Foundation Grey Bruce.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the fifth year of this award, which recognizes the hard work and dedication of local students committed to environmental stewardship and clean water protection,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody. “Ensuring the safety and sustainability of our natural resources remains a top priority, and we are proud to continue supporting the important work of the Walkerton Clean Water Centre.”

About the Walkerton Clean Water Legacy Award

Established in 2020, the Walkerton Clean Water Legacy Award commemorates the Walkerton water crisis that occurred 25 years ago, honoring both the community's resilience and those who suffered from the tragedy. The award supports the next generation of students dedicated to environmental protection and clean water management.

The award is funded annually through the earned income from an endowed fund held by the Community Foundation Grey Bruce, a registered charity.

Stuart Reid, Executive Director of the Community Foundation Grey Bruce, emphasized the importance of the award: “Sustainable communities and effective clean water management are crucial to the future of Grey Bruce. This scholarship plays a key role in fostering student development and building skills that inspire hope and drive positive change for our future.”

Last Year's Award Recipients

In 2024, the award was shared between two exceptional students: Rachel Woods, a Master of Political Economy student at Carleton University specializing in Climate Change; and Kiera De Michele, a Bachelor of One Health student at the University of Guelph.

Woods, reflecting on her academic journey, shared: “I am grateful for the financial support that has enabled me to present my water justice research across three continents—Latin America, North America, and Europe. The opportunities I’ve received because of this scholarship are invaluable, and I am excited to continue this work."
